1. Overview
Convert PDF to Excel is a Chrome browser extension that extracts tables from PDF files and converts them into editable Excel or CSV spreadsheets. This privacy policy describes what data we collect, how we use it, how it is stored, and with whom it is shared.
2. Data We Collect
PDF file content: When you convert a PDF, its content is processed to extract tables. Text-based PDFs are parsed locally in your browser and never leave your device. In AI mode, the PDF content is sent to our backend server for enhanced extraction.
Browser fingerprint: A hash derived from local browser signals (canvas rendering, user agent, screen resolution, timezone, hardware concurrency) is generated locally and sent to our backend to detect abuse and enforce fair usage of the free tier. It is not used for advertising or tracking and cannot identify you personally.
Usage settings: Preferences such as output format (Excel/CSV) are stored locally in your browser using Chrome storage.
Feedback (optional): If you choose to submit feedback through the in-app rating prompt, your message and star rating are sent to our backend. No email or other personal identifier is collected.
IP address: Our backend server logs your IP address for installation counts, AI conversion requests, and uninstall events, to prevent abuse of the free tier and understand aggregate usage. It is not linked to your identity and is not shared with third parties.
Anonymous installation ID: A random identifier (UUID) is generated when the extension is installed and stored locally. It is sent with usage events so we can tell one installation from another. It contains no personal information and is not linked to any account or profile.
Usage events: We record anonymous events describing how the extension is used: opening the side panel, loading a file, starting and finishing a conversion, downloading the result, clicking the star rating, and returning to the extension on a later day. Events include the extension version, the type of file you selected (for example "pdf", "xlsx" or "jpg"), the number of pages, and error codes when a conversion fails or is blocked. We never send file names or file contents in these events — only the file type and the technical error code.
Uninstall survey (optional): When you remove the extension, a page opens where you may select a reason and add a comment. Submitting it is voluntary; if you close the page, nothing is sent.
3. How We Use Your Data
PDF content is used solely to extract tables and generate your spreadsheet. It is not used for any other purpose.
Browser fingerprint is used only to detect abuse and prevent free-tier limit bypass. It is never used for advertising, profiling, or cross-site tracking.
Feedback is used to improve the extension and is not linked to any other data we collect.
Usage events and the installation ID are used only in aggregate, to see where people get stuck, how often conversions fail, and which features are actually used. They are never used to build a profile of you or to track you across websites.
We do not use any collected data for advertising, behavioral tracking, or sale to third parties.
4. Data Storage and Retention
Local storage: Your preferences and settings are stored in your browser using Chrome local storage and stay on your device.
Our backend server: PDF content submitted in AI mode is processed transiently and is not retained after conversion is complete. Feedback messages are retained for up to 30 days to review and act on them.
Usage events: Anonymous usage events and uninstall survey answers are kept in aggregate logs on our server and are not tied to any personal identifier.
5. Data Sharing
We share data only as necessary to provide the AI conversion feature:
Mistral AI (privacy policy) — in AI mode, PDF content is sent to the Mistral OCR API, which performs the text and table recognition. This is the primary processor for both scanned and text-based PDFs.
OpenRouter (privacy policy) — if Mistral fails or returns an unusable result, PDF content is routed through OpenRouter to Anthropic Claude or OpenAI GPT models as a fallback. Content is used solely to generate your spreadsheet and is subject to OpenRouter's and the underlying model provider's data retention policies.
We do not sell, rent, or share user data with advertising networks or data brokers.
6. Permissions
sidePanel: To display the conversion interface in Chrome's side panel.
storage: To save your preferences (output format, settings) locally in the browser.
Host permission (api.devexthub.com): To send your PDF to our backend for AI-powered extraction, only when you explicitly choose AI mode for scanned/image-based PDFs.
7. Data Security
All data transmitted to our backend, to Mistral AI and to OpenRouter is sent over encrypted HTTPS. PDF content is not retained on our servers after conversion is complete. Fingerprint hashes do not contain personally identifiable information.
8. Your Rights
Since we do not collect personally identifiable information, clearing your browser storage removes all locally stored data. For any data requests, contact us at the address below.
